Cool, we’re also on ais so will keep an eye out for you. We’re planning to cross to Indonesia in November so might be chasing your tail!
Hi everyone!
Nic, Julia and out two toddlers Huey and Molly on Blue Yonder here! Blue Yonder is a 40ft Simpson Cat. We’re currently in Beagle bay doing a few boat jobs before getting into the Kimberley in about a weeks time, plan is to go through to Darwin by November..
Is there anyone still heading that direction?
cheers!
We’ve bought a well used 3.65m tinnie with a 2003 Mercury 15hp 4-stroke engine off the street in Exmouth. Luckily it (just) fits our davits weight limits and space between our hulls. So creek exploring we can go. However, the back end is very heavy (engine alone is 51kg!) and there’s no way we can drag it any distance at all on land. I don’t think the beach wheels from our other dinghy would be much use on anything other than hard pack, so we aren’t planning to move them.
With the big tides, does that mean we are very limited in the amount of time we can spend on land?

Anyone still down this way heading towards the Kimberley?

Thank you so much steve
issue may be that I have an iPad not a laptop? A screenshot of the comments would be very helpful if someone would be prepared to email or text to me?
thanks again
Thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded libre office – great software! Unfortunately I was unable to edit the anchorage list document to see any comments – cannot even see any red triangle to hover over the comments? I have tried adjusting column widths and still no luck.
any suggestions welcome – all other information seems to be there – would like to see people’s comments about the anchorages if possible.
thanks

Thank you so much – will give it a try!
Hi Frank and Marianne,
We’ve just arrived in Albany and it looks like we’ve got a couple weeks of successive lows and westerlies, so arriving Freo in 3-4 weeks. I guess just a provisioning pit stop, then heading up the coast. Hopefully we’ll catch up with you!
Thanks to the FSC for their awesome WA cruising guide and KCCYC for the detailed Kimberley guides.
We’ve been using Starlink RV with the rectangular dishy since early November in Brisbane, along the NSW and VIC coasts. Great upgrade over relying on Telstra towers for mobile coverage. We’ve used it up to 20 miles offshore and boat speeds up to 20 knots – no problems at all. One thing we’ve noticed that if it is turned on while the boat is moving that it never stops “Searching”. If that happens we simply slow down to below 1.5 knots boat speed for a minute or so, then once it is online we can speed back up again.
It does have odd short interruptions due to network issues and sometimes obstructions (such as the mast if the boat rotates at anchor). It also has difficulty if the view to the south is blocked by tall mountains.
We are paying AUD174 per month. Not super cheap, but much more effective than mobile and cheaper (and faster) than other satellite services. It is awesome and certainly a game changer for coastal connectivity. We are keeping our Iridium Go for passages.
We’re looking at high-sided tinnie’s such as the Horizon 355 Angler and Stacer 349 Territory. These only seem to be available new, which we’re not sure about as I’m not sure we’ll keep it once we leave croc country and head into SE Asia, so we’d be selling again in Darwin.
What’s the availability of used tinnie’s in WA? Gumtree seems to show a bunch of small Stacer dinghies. We’re hoping to not buy before we get to WA, but if we did buy new it seems about $1k cheaper on the East Coast.
We’ve got a 3.3m inflatable with 15hp motor (not a RHIB – inflatable side tubes, open front (like a small Thundercat), and inflatable floor). Too small and/or risky?
If size matters, then if we were to buy a tinny for the Kimberley how big should we go? We’re a sailing cat and could tow it.
Thanks!
Hi Ross et al,
Foxy Kitty is planning to cruise the Kimberley in 2023, arriving from Perth in May or so. We’re currently in Brisbane and will be heading down to Sydney for New Years Eve, Melbourne for Australia Day, and Port Lincoln for race week. Early to mid March we hope to cross the Bight and enter WA. We’ll spend a few weeks in Fremantle, then slowly head up the coast. By the end of September we expect to be in Darwin and clearing out for Indonesia. Hopefully the weather will generally cooperate!
Foxy Kitty is an Outremer 55L sailing cat with four aboard: my wife Deb and I and our two cats Tom and Jerry. We’ve spent the past year and a half on the East coast and now we’re looking forward to seeing the South, West and North coasts.
Thanks for hosting this website and all the valuable content. Hope to catch up with you this coming year!
Cheers,
Tom and Deb

I spoke to Dominica at ALPS re my rejected permit application 10 minutes age. Access to Berkeley and King George Rivers is closed.
NOT just the land access. I specifically asked if I could just sail up to see the falls and not go ashore. She said NO.
She told me to go to Balanggarra.com.au and ask them how to arrange permission. Use web info form or via their email address.
Thanks Ross much appreciated. 🙂
