If you’re planning a cruise to the Kimberley in 2023, use this topic to post a brief outline of your sailing plans. You can arrange to meet up with other vessels, cruise in company, ask questions, get info etc.
Hope to see you out there.

Hi Ross
We will be cruising the Kimberley’s 2023, we brought our boat Solitude up from Hobart this year to Darwin. We have left the boat in the Cullen Bay Marina for the wet season and plan on returning April 2023.Solitude is a Ranger 65ft fly bridge cruiser. The boat is well fitted out for long term cruising. My wife Therese and I have been planning and looking forward to exploring the Kimberley’s for a number of years.
Since joining the Club a few years ago the information and advice we have had from you has been invaluable, and we are all ears to any information we can receive.
Talk soon

Hi Ross et al,
Foxy Kitty is planning to cruise the Kimberley in 2023, arriving from Perth in May or so. We’re currently in Brisbane and will be heading down to Sydney for New Years Eve, Melbourne for Australia Day, and Port Lincoln for race week. Early to mid March we hope to cross the Bight and enter WA. We’ll spend a few weeks in Fremantle, then slowly head up the coast. By the end of September we expect to be in Darwin and clearing out for Indonesia. Hopefully the weather will generally cooperate!
Foxy Kitty is an Outremer 55L sailing cat with four aboard: my wife Deb and I and our two cats Tom and Jerry. We’ve spent the past year and a half on the East coast and now we’re looking forward to seeing the South, West and North coasts.
Thanks for hosting this website and all the valuable content. Hope to catch up with you this coming year!
Cheers,
Tom and Deb

Hi Frank and Marianne,
We’ve just arrived in Albany and it looks like we’ve got a couple weeks of successive lows and westerlies, so arriving Freo in 3-4 weeks. I guess just a provisioning pit stop, then heading up the coast. Hopefully we’ll catch up with you!
Thanks to the FSC for their awesome WA cruising guide and KCCYC for the detailed Kimberley guides.

Hi all,
Starfish (a Lightwave 38 cat) will be leaving Townsville in April bound for Darwin & the Kimberley’s. Last year we left Mooloolaba & cruised to Lizard Is & back to T’ville. 2023 will be our biggest sailing adventure yet. Excited & daunted (big tides, crocs & isolation- I might sink the boat with all the spare parts I’m accumulating). Look forward to meeting everyone should we cross paths or to travel in company if heading the same direction . Rick & Kerry

On Whisper, a Bavaria 47cc, we intend to depart Fremantle Sailing Club in April, Broome in May, and by August either Darwin or return to Fremantle. The FSC Exmouth Rally (and Race) starts on May 6th, a little late for us and our August deadline, but sailing in company would be great for anyone interested in an April departure from Freo.

we are getting excited! Watching the weather and keeping an eye on our yacht in Darwin. Reading up and doing our lists. We are travelling with a dog and planning to follow all advice. I am currently looking at snakes instead of crocs for a bit. Any advice appreciated. Looking at purchasing perfect aluminium dingy to be happy. Advise away. Anthea and Peter

Rusty and Tibby Strickland here from Satori Two – Granger Catamaran. Our current plans are to leave Raja Ampat in Indonesia and sail down to Darwin about mid May to check back in to Australia. Our aim is to then explore the Kimberleys doing a return trip and being back in Darwin mid to late July 2023. Lovely to see there will be some other boats in the region.

No call Kimberley sailors.
Hi all Kimberley sailors.
We are planning to do crew swap at Horizontal Falls. Has anyone else done this?
Any advice would be welcome and any suggestions regarding alternative spots to do a crew swap without having to go to Broome would be appreciated.

Hi Richard,
Check with the operators of Hori Falls. I tried a few years back, and they stopped allowing one way trips on the seaplanes.
Other options
- Air Kimberley charter out of Broome to Cockatoo Island Resort. You will need to check that the resort will be open this year and that you can arrange a lift from the Cockatoo airstrip to the beach. This would be the best value and easiest to arrange.
- Getting a bit more pricy, but KAS helicopters out of Broome or Derby will drop you just about anywhere they can land a chopper in the west Kimberley.
- From about the Hunter River to most of the east Kimberley, try Kimberley Air Tours by float plane out of Kununurra. They often do crew transfers and will bring out supplies from Kununurra shops. We have used them several times. They get very busy in the dry season, so book well in advance.
- Chopper off the beach on Naturalist Island, near Hunter River mouth, to Mitchell Plateau airstrip (Mitchell Falls airstrip), then charter plane to Kununurra. HeliSpirit and Aviair.
- Paspayley Pearls will charter their Drummond float planes out of Darwin or Broome, but it will be expensive if its just for a few people.
Cheers,
Ross

Hi All
I am still working on a crew change arrangement.
The latest is to sail is to change over in Cygnet Bay for a night or 2 .
The new crew will drive from Broome with supplies.
What is Cygnet Bay like as an Anchorage ?

We anchored there for about a week in Sept a few years ago. Good anchorage. You’ll be a long way off the beach at high tide. Hope you have wheels on your tender.

Hi Ross
We are long time residents of Cullen bay and with LunarGlow we have visited the King George and Berkeley rivers many times. We are planning two trips this year and keen to catch up with KK members. Our first trip will be in early to mid May. Any boats leaving around that time from Darwin? If there are any members coming to Cullen Bay to depart in May we would be keen to help out in their preparation. Then any catch up to discuss plans would be great.

Hi Allan
I fly back to Darwin 21st May, load Maia and depart Cullen Bay about 23-24th May for King George for a few nights. We then have to be in Broome for crew change for 4-5th June. Currently planning where to sail/stop etc on route to Broome. We are then off onto Perth. Will return to do the Kimberley in a few years.

Hi Alan,
Looks like it will be busy around the east Kimberley in May. I know of at least 5 other Cullen Bay power boats heading over around then including Ros and I on R&R. All owned by experienced Kimberley sailors.
Might be an opportunity for an impromptu KCCYC Beach Party sometime in May. Many of the boats have Starlink internet on board, so keep an eye out for a post here if we decide to have a gathering somewhere.
Cheers

Hi Ross
yes I was talking with the the power boat guys about the May trips. It looks like a lot will travel down the east coast of the gulf to the Perrons then across to the Berkeley and onward. A catch up would be good when you are up. We plan a couple of weeks trip. Even thinking of the Lynn river as well. See you soon.
I am happy to help any KKYC members should they need a local CB presence.

Hi Kimberley Sailors
is it possible to get gas bottle refills along the Kimberley coast?
-
13/04/2023 at 5:29 am #3969
Kalumburu is the only place. But you would need to get a lift into town from Honeymoon Bay or McGowan Island camps to pick it up.
Cheers

Looks like there will be quite a few boats around the East Kimberley coast in May. This may be a good excuse for an impromptu KCCYC beach party around mid May.
Someone has already suggested the sand spit at the entrance to the King George River as a likely venue for a BarBQ.
If you have internet on board, I’ll send out an email and post it on the News and Events Page if we get enough interest from boats in the area. Or keep you ear on the scuttlebutt from other boats, as no doubt the word will get around.
Cheers Ross

Well, we’re very slowly making our way up the Western Australian coast – currently at Yardie Creek enjoying the Ningaloo Reef. We figure it will be another month before we’re past Broome, so unfortunately we’ll need to un-RSVP for the 4 July beach party.
Anyone still down this way heading towards the Kimberley?
