If you’re planning a cruise to the Kimberley in 2020, use this topic to post a brief outline of your plans to meet up with other vessels, cruise in company, ask questions, get info etc.

Hope to see you out there.

We are planning to finally complete our 10 year cruise around the outside at Freshwater Bay this year. Heading North from Denham in our latest boat, SC Canefire, after the cyclones disappear late April/May.  Stopping at Exmouth for a quick haulout along the way.  Hopefully we wont get too distracted by the Motebellos, Thevenards, and Rowley sholls along the way.

Neringa, our RL28 trailer-able yacht will be sailing from Darwin mid April to cruise the Kimberley for 11 weeks ending in Derby. Will be starting with towing a 3.5t boat from Victoria to Darwin, then a long drive to Derby with car and empty trailer and then a 25 hour bus trip back to Darwin to finally get under way. On board will be partner Helen and myself towing a red inflatable. Hope to bump into (people not boats) a few members along the way. Given our time frame we will have to keep moving pretty regularly to make the distance in the time we have. Just hoping for no late season cyclones across blown apart. Intending to sail directly to the Berkley with 2 overnighters.  Does anyone have any feedback on the risks of hitting logs from wet season run off mid April? Cheers Mark

Hi Mark, Logs depend on how much rain we get this wet season. 2019 was a low rainfall wet season and I didn’t see any logs in mid April. We’ve had 2 “dry” wet seasons in a row in 18 and 19, so if this year gets plenty of rain and perhaps a cyclone or 2, you can expect a lot of logs will be washed out of the rivers. Don’t sail at night and keep a good lookout is the advise for not hitting a log.

I wonder why you’re leaving from Darwin and not Wyndham as your starting point. Sailing across the Bonaparte Gulf in a 28ft trailer sailor will be very interesting if you get a bit of wind, which is more likely than not.

                    Cheers,

                    Ross

                    Hi Ross,

I have chosen Darwin over Wyndham because of the logistics involved. I will be driving up from Vic solo so need somewhere secure I can launch and moor the boat while I drive the car and trailer to Derby our end point. The bus from Derby stops in Darwin within walking distance of the boat ramp and marina. Stocking up the boat will be easier in Darwin than Wyndham and my wife flys into Darwin once I am ready to go. Because of these things Wyndham is a bit problematic. Any suggestions on these things would be welcome.

I have done a bit of open water sailing in Bass Strait in seas up to 5M  and 25 to 30 knots in a 23ft trailer sailer including a couple of overnighters and Neringa being a bit longer handles better. I am aiming to leave Darwin on or around the 11th of April to avoid the stronger winds but obviously will be looking for a suitable weather window with less chance of strong winds or cyclones. The log issue does worry me a bit though. I was hoping for a continuous passage to the Berkley aiming for an average speed of 4 knots. Closer to the date I will reappraise this idea based on reports from members and how the wet season panned out.  Even if I coastal hopped down to Wadeye it would still need an overnighter across to the Berkley from there. Unfortunately we only have 11 weeks to reach Derby so was hoping to cover this first leg as quickly as possible. Having said all that the last thing I want to do is give my partner Helen a big scare. Cheers Mark
