Hi Ross/ Geoff and All
Just read Wendy Watters blog of there trip from Wyndham to Derby, Great read and interesting. We are looking to do similar trip next year and have a similar truck rig as Geoff. So i have a couple questions about the boat ramp, did you have any trouble pulling out your trailer once you launched? Can you stay on the main finger jetty while you load the boat?
We have found in the past trying launch a heavy boat can be a bit of a nightmare with strong currents.
Cheers

I launched my trailer sailer at this ramp and found it to be excellent. Very muddy at low tide though still adaquite. I pulled my boat out with my nissan navara at a very low tide, but apart from smelly mud everywhere, had no problems tStaying on the jetty is not a problem. There is plenty of room. Crocks are reputed to be a nuisance but l had no problems.

Hi,
We will be departing Darwin for the Kimberley around July 9. We have a couple of crew joining us for 3 weeks. I’m thinking drop them at Wyndham. Does anyone have advice to the contrary? What’s the cruising coast like between Darwin and the Wyndham turn off? What do the Darwin mob usually do, cut straight across to the Berkeley? Advice appreciated as the crew need to be offloaded by end of July somewhere where they can catch a bus to Perth.
Thanks
Frank & Marianne

Hi Frank and Marianne,
The east coast of the Bonaparte Gulf is relatively flat and uninspiring compared to the west coast. Much of the coast is shoaling beaches. There are some nice mangrove lined rivers with good fishing. If its spectacular scenery you’re after, go west across the gulf.
If you want to bus out, Wyndham is your only choice. Otherwise it’s charter aircraft to get out. See info here https://kccyc.org.au/charter-aircraft-contacts/
Be aware that Wyndham is about a 90 nautical mile round trip from where you leave the Bonaparte and head into the Cambridge Gulf towards Wyndham, and the tide runs at 3-5 knots on a slow day, faster on spring tides. It could be easier and cheaper to fly the crew out by float plane to Kununurra from the Kimberley coast.
Depending on how strong the south easterlies are blowing, I normally follow the coast from Darwin to Port Keats area, then turn west to the Berkeley or King George to keep the SE breezes as close as possible to stern on. If your boat travels well in beam seas and wind, you can head straight to the Berkeley or KG from Darwin. But the Bonaparte can be very rough in plus 20 knots, so take care tackling a beam sea.
Cheers,
Ross
