Hi Buzzard, thats a pretty extensive list and a good resource for people looking for a place to start with preparing for such a trip.

I would only add a couple of things, Wasabi Paste and Soy for the Sashimi and a Soda Stream with spare canisters, we have given up on the soft drink cans and make our own when needed and especially lots of soda to make the Whiskey last a bit longer.

Hi Dave, Great idea putting your list up here.

I cant see Worcestershire Sauce for the oysters. Best way I know to cook them is in the half shell on a grate over a beach fire with a squirt of WS. They get great smokey flavour. Don’t cook them too long or they turn to rubber.

Also worth taking on board is a wire rack with fold up legs and an aluminium BarBQ plate for beach barbies.

              Hi All,
We love the open fire method of cooking the huge Kimberley oysters Ross! Will give that a try this year. You seem to have the provisioning well and truly sorted Dave. We were somewhat daunted by the task initially but we were surprised to have judged the quantities quite well by the time we reached Wyndham 12 weeks after leaving Broome. We had success with some planter pots of greens. Parsley, spring onions, perennial spinach, mint, and basil for the pizza. Snow peas will sprout really quickly and can be harvested in a week – delicious on a wrap with vegemite and cheese once you have run out of fresh greens….We were advised to take Kipfler unwashed potatoes with us and this proved to be a great tip. They lasted weeks longer than the washed spuds we also had on board.

The old camp oven had a work out last year. Many roasts, dampers and other delicious creations were enjoyed and shared with other yachties. Don’t forget to take a fold up spade if you plan to have a few beach fires. We are going for the soda stream option this trip, it will save us on the storage room needed for soda and tonic water etc. (and weight ! – more room now for some extra red wine?)

We also had a yoghurt maker on board. This is fantastic if you enjoy yoghurt with your breakfast. Easy-Yo has a website where the yoghurt maker and the sachets of yoghurt culture can be brought in bulk. Just mix with water and leave overnight. Each sachet makes a 1kg tub. We like the Greek, Natural, Coconut and Greek with Honey flavours.

Can anyone recommend a butcher in Darwin to fill a bulk order for our next trip? Looking forward to reading more tips re provisioning from the kccyc members.

Cheers – Janie and Kevin “Sojourn”

Tip: Parap Quality Meats filled our bulk meat order for 2014 cruising and the beef, chicken, lamb and pork was superb! The guys there will also cryovac your order into serving sizes on request, saving us the time and effort, which we appreciated. We recommend them if provisioning from Darwin.. Regards, Janie and Kevin

I’m going to ask parap meats if they’ll label w type meat as hard to quickly tell what’s what. A butcher on East Coast did this & was great. Also to vac seal with minimum plastic around each portion to save space.

We used Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats last year. (Same shops as the Fannie Bay Cool Spot Cafe). Meat was great and his service was spot on. We told him what size portions we wanted the meat cryovaced into, with labels on each pack and he froze it for us, which saves the boat freezer a lot of hard work.

Our experience with Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats in September 2017 was a bit mixed.

Below is our posting on their Facebook page and when I look there are quite a few negative postings (mixed in with very positive postings) –

                        https://www.facebook.com/Fannie-Bay-Gourmet-Meats-324714834257090/

Lamb rumps and other meat were full of fat and gristle that required lots of trimming.

We placed an order for a 2 month sailing trip with a specific request to have all fat removed prior to vacuum sealing as we have limited freezer space. And, seal/freeze all in the 16cm bags they offered us.

Order was delayed such that it arrived the day of departure so we could not return it. Opening the boxes was a horror to see the order was twice the size of that we had from Cairns previously as it included a lot of fat and gristle.

Lamb rumps were only marginally edible after extensive trimming, rump steaks were rimmed with the thick fat that we specifically asked to be removed and the chicken thighs were not in the 16cm vacuum bags requested.

Disappointing for an $800 order ($797 to be exact).

Kinda sad as their Greek lamb sausages were good and the kangaroo special order was awesome.

We will go back when in Darwin in May and quiz them why the order was not as requested. We may again buy their sausages, skippy and chicken – so long as they don’t throw us out of the store!

But search elsewhere for lamb rumps (eg. Parup Quality Meats or a Coles).

An update on Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats for May 2018.

Though we had mixed results in September 2017 we went back and hammered out exactly what we wanted and stated we would refuse any unsatisfactory product or packaging.

Bronwyn was agreeable and our lamb backstraps (basically lamb fillet – $49.99/kg but very lean), kangaroo fillet, rump steak (with the fat removed this time), Greek and beef merlot sausages, chicken thighs and pork so far seems really good.

We avoided lamb rumps that were disgusting last year.

And, all cryovac’d in 16cm vacuum bags to fit our narrow freezer.

Took only 2 days and far less expensive than 2017

                        So, altogether a different experience.
