since us “babyboomers” invented climate change may to mid august, the”dry”,july would be the best month, june is ok early august as well but in 2022 last 2 weeks of august got hot quick.South easterlies blow dry season but its flakey if your planing on sailing carry extra fuel,if a power boat the SE breeze depending on velocity can stir up the seas by 10-1100hrs and make it unpleasant. The daytime temp eases during the dry and it is made more pleasant by the SE breeze but be aware that the temps of recent “drys” get to low to mid 30’s requiring sun protection. The nights cool off june/july nights are “cold” to locals but have the bonus of keeping mosies/sandflies subdued.BTW if you don’t have it already download a copy (free) of Freemantle Sailing Club Cruising Guide.
      cheers steve

G’day, just downloaded the excel file, opened it with libre office 7.3.2.2 running on Openbsd with XFCE desktop,it opened without warning that the excel file contains macros that it cannot handle.Column F “Information & Comments” some of the cells have tiny red squares that when mouse is hovered over them open information popup,to open Darwin sailing club links (on my system),click on cell containing, this will outline cell, hold down Ctl key and click on cell again ,this opens a new tab in browser (Firefox) and loads page, your system may vary.
I emailed the excel file to my partners windows 10 laptop and opened it with Office 365 it looked the same apart from the cells having triangles ,there was no other information revealed.the excel file i opened is 26.3Kib check yours for corruption, good luck, cheers steve

G’day Teedrk, Have a 3.85m with 5HP 2 stroke that has done 2 trips kimberley coast, one Wyndham to Broome.Planes with two people, tough and stable, use full length wooden oars as they row well and you can punt them along in water too shallow for outboard.
Don’t have a collar as suggested by Ross as we fold it to fit beside cabin on 10m yacht, lots of advice re crocs elsewhere on this forum, cheers steve

G’day Richard,How long should you allow, you could see the major sites in a matter of months,i’m off on my third trip this year, barely scratched
                    the surface.
go to https://fsc.com.au/cruising-section/wa-cruising-guide/ and download it ,print off the kimberley section and carry it with you.
Also print tide charts of areas you will travel from the BOM website then with a bit of common sense you should be right.
                    Always be CROC wary
                    cheers steve

The people of Wyndham and Kununurra regard the Berkley and King George as their backyard ,it will be very divisive to restrict access to locals

G’day Mark,Crossed King sound waning 6 m Derby tide in November 2020,track was Byron island then Goose channel to Coppermine creek. The Derby tide was ebbing as we approached Byron and the flow assisted our passage to Coppermine.Sorry to be short on detail but i’m a long way from the logbook at the moment, cheers steve

G’day, interested in these things so checked it out, Garmin has aquired Delorme, its mainly for text comunication and sending your position via iridium satellite (another $400 PA),its not intended for navigation from what i saw.Shame but, if it could use garmin maps it would save lugging a sat phone and Etrex when exploring on shore ,cheers steve

                                Hello Geoff,

May 1st has a 8.03m tide at Wyndham at 0810 you don’t fight 7.29m of water trying to get back into the gulf, if you left Wyndham at about 0730 and your preston goes like my friend’s you’ll be at the Berkley  that day.

However, if you want to look around and fish mangrove creeks and/or Forrest river, Still Bay is just past Forrest river, i have not used it but RJP BOF says a little rocky on tide change, mud holding.

Next one is Cherrie cove behind Ina island, which is just past Adolphus Island, I use this one lots (far as the yacht gets on one tide) haven’t caught fish there but rock bar keeps calm and mangrove is thin allowing breeze from gulf to keep mozzies at bay.

The bay at Helby river mouth i have used but may be rough if south/easterlies kick in early. We never anchor up rivers as usually the hills stifle breezes allowing mozzies and sandflies (if you have sensitve skin sandflies turn a trip into a nightmare) free reign .

Anchorages to avoid ,Lacrosse island and after Berkley river,Seaplane bay, both memorable nights.

                                Anyway have fun.

                                Cheers Steve

From Cruiser Forums about “Long Reef”:

                                  “Location: Darwin
Re: Vloggers hit an uncharted rock/reef in the Kimberleys
We were contacted by the Caledonian Sky on 18th August to say they had Peter and Maggie on board and they were docking in Darwin soon. The grounding must have happened about a week prior to that as I believe they spent several days on the cabin roof waiting to be rescued. The area is replete with very large Saltwater crocodiles which are well known for attacking many Cruisers dinghy’s.

It is somewhere on the eastern side of York Sound. I think they were heading for a location known as Rainforest Ravine.

We didn’t get too much detail on location which is understandable while Peter was looking at salvage options. Our understanding is that they had originally intended to anchor near Cape Pond but that was not suitable and so decided to push on to another anchorage but strong tide against them left them short of daylight hours and trying to come into an anchorage at night.

I’m not passing any judgement on the decisions.”

Caledonian Sky left Broome 20/7/17 docked Darwin Saturday 19/8/17.

                                  -Steve
